Ghosts and Pregnancy

I've heard many stories about crying child ghosts and the ghosts of women looking for lost children or lost babies.   I've heard stories of  phantom fathers looking for babies and creeks that wail like a baby in the night, but I have never heard a ghost story about a pregnant ghost.  I started looking online for a story like that tonight and I found something else instead.  Although there are a few pregnant ghosts stories, there are many more stories about women who are haunted during their pregnancy.

I googled pregnant ghosts.  You can try this too.  What I found was innumerable stories told by pregnant women indicating that they had suddenly become more receptive to ghosts and the paranormal after they became pregnant.  On babycenter.com,  I found an entire conversation of members sharing their ghost stories.  One woman described seeing a ghost before she miscarried.  Another woman said she tried to block ghosts out while she was pregnant.   There was a running theme of complications associated with paranormal presences.  There were also very benevolent stories.  One woman described waking up to see the ghost of her father standing over her. She had been having a difficult pregnancy and her father told her everything was going to be OK.

There are similar conversations on many paranormal websites as well.  On unexplained mysteries, a pregnant woman asked if other women had paranormal experiences during pregnancy.  She described her own experiences fearfully.  One interesting response was by a commenter said that as a woman's overall senses are heightened during pregnancy it would make sense that they would also be more sensitive the paranormal.  The stories of women haunted during pregnancy are numerous and I tend to think that perhaps it is do to a woman's heightened senses during pregnancy.  There are things you just don't notice when you aren't pregnant that you suddenly become aware of when you are pregnant.    I am, as always, open to other opinions on the matter.  Although, there are many posts by pregnant women who have been haunted,  I haven't heard much in the way of interpretation of these phenomena so I would love to hear what readers think about the matter.

Fascinating! I'm not familiar with this phenomenon, but I'd certainly be more interested in hearing more about it.

So, so, SO interesting! Such a neat angle to look at it from. And I'm fairly sure you're expecting now right? You can be the guinea pig and travel to haunted places and let us know if you're more receptive or not! (But this is really a neat article and a super neat way to view it. Also, if you are expecting for real: CONGRATULATIONS!)

Courtney... You are so perceptive. I am pregnant, but the only thing I seem to be growing closer to these days is the bathroom. I will definately be a guinea pig and report back if I do become more receptive during my pregnancy;)

I didn't know you were pregnant, jessica! congrats! (no wonder you were curious about pregnant ghosts :) ...but now I'm curious as well. seems like a woman who died in childbirth or was murdered while pregnant, etc., would be a prime candidate for becoming a ghost as things were definitely not 'finished' in her life.

First of all, congrats on your pregnancy!

As far as the ghosts go...

I had totally forgotten about my first ghostly experience till I read your post. I was 20 and expecting. Took a nap, then just when I was in that dreamstate before waking completely, I saw a man standing in the doorframe to our bedroom. He just stood there and stared. I didn't feel threatened. I was more curious about who he was and why he was there.

My niece, a teen mom, had a more malevolent spirit lay a hand on her pregnant belly. Her son is now in college and doing well. But the experience scared her. Freaked me out, too!

Great post...I had not thought of senses being heightened whilst pregnant. I was looking for info on this as for the past few months I have experienced waking to the sound of a child running along my hallway and beside my bed. Then, about 4 weeks ago I woke to find a young girl with blonde curly hair in my bedroom with her back to me facing very closely to the wall. I have just found out I am pregnant and can't help thinking it is all linked somehow.

Hi,

I am almost nine months pregnant and have had two very intense experiences in the past 2 months. I do believe it is directly tied to my pregnancy. The first instance happened at around 3 am, I woke up out of nowhere and opened my eyes and saw a black figure almost like a shadow right next to my bed. I didn't have a bad feeling just acknowledged it was there and went back to bed. Last night, I woke up around the same time and it almost felt like a dream, but I knew it wasn't-- My closet had a faint light on in it, and in the door way I saw a man and a young boy standing there, transparent but could see their faces. No one I knew at all. Once again, they seemed happy and didn't give me an evil vibe at all. I rubbed my eyes and they were still there at which point I freaked out and snapped out of it, they were gone. I do believe pregnancy heightens paranormal experiences. I have always had strange things happen since I was younger, and my mom's house was haunted but I never actually saw a ghost until now!

I have always believed in a "spirit world/realm" because almost my mom's entire family has a "6th" sense. No, they don't "see" dead people. We (my mom, sister, and I) have always known when something was wrong. (ie. when someone has passed, or gotten injured.) I (for some unknown reason) used to walk in a cemetery not far from my house to relax and get away from things when I was a teenager. I have no idea where the fear came from, but I have always feared for pregnant women going into cemeteries. I have always had a fear of spirits "clinging" to a fetus. So, when I found myself pregnant, my husband had started a family tree for his family from Italy. We went to Michigan for a family reunion of his and the only way he would get correct information on birth and death dates was to visit a cemetery. I had no choice in going. I was very anxious! As my husband was standing at a grave stone writing down dates, I caught something standing behind me out of the corner of my eye. I turned to look at the person. She was just slightly shorter than me. She was dressed in a very basic, older dress. She had her hair up in some kind of bun, and she was wearing glasses. She reached out, put her hand on my shoulder and smiled at me as if to tell me, "It's OK." She looked very familiar to me but I could not place her. About a month later we went to a family event for my family. My mother wanted to go to the family grave yard (go figure) to check on the up-keep. When passing my GREAT-grandmother's grave (she passed before I was born), there just happened to be a picture on porcilain of my great-grandparents. The lady I saw in MI was my great-grandmother. She was telling me we (my baby and I) were going to be fine!

Hi, my name is Amy and I'm 20 years old and recently found out I'm 11 weeks pregnant. Weird things have been happening lately and just wanted any thoughts on it. Strange things have always gone on around me it seemms, I've had accidental encounters with mediums who literally have just walked into my life etc but since I've been pregnant its become more regular. My boyfriend just puts it down to hormones but I keep seeing shadows of figures around the house .. they aren't scary but it is a little unnerving and everything seems to be 1:11 or 11:11. The most frequent occurance is waking up around 1:11 in the morning and getting a strong smell of male aftershave (that doesn't belong to my boyfriend)and seeing the figure of a man in my room, again not sinister but very unnerving, these occur mostly when I'm on my own!

Hi I am also pregnant and have had a lot of ghostly experiences of late. Often they are creepy but generally don't seem to be malevolent. One interpretation that you might find interesting comes from my father who has a hindu Indian background. They are aware that pregnant women are often bothered by ghosts and believe that spirits actually try to possess the unborn fetus because they have a strong desire to be embodies again but are not in the right stage of existence to do so as yet. It still worries me the effect of having immature and irritating spirits surrounding you when you are in a vulnerable state and going through a wonderful transformative time in your life. You also have the instinct to protect your baby although I think generally they aren't going to do damage just wake you up at night. I always experience these things between 3-4 am sometimes earlier if it's daylight savings. And also if I happen to be sleeping on my back which can be hard to avoid due to comfort reasons. Hope that this helps to provide another interesting theory :)

Hi there :-)
I was googling this topic because I am 8 weeks pregnant with second child. We live in a very old house (built in late 1800's). Last night I was in the bathroom and turned as I sensed someone standing next to me. No one was.. But it happened again a minute later and I had this incredibly strong sense of someone gentle placing their hand on my lower back then leaving. It was unnerving but not scary which was just bizarre. I am a scientist and have never really believed any paranormal activity is possible. I wonder if possible? Or crazy hormonal hyper vigilance? Lol :-)

I believe that animals and children are very tuned into the other world, so another theory might be that you are channeling your little one's connections as you are also connected during pregnancy

Hi Amy: I just happened across this post while doing research on paranormal activity during pregnancy. There are some great posts here. One that particularly caught my attention was the one by karlieglassclarke. I started thinking about the connection between poltergeist activity and teenagers--whose hormones are also at an all time high. Maybe that was the case in this instance.

I also believe that sometimes the spirit of the unborn child comes through, back and forth. This is a fascinating subject. Thanks for the great post. I will be following your blog from now on.

did anyone allow a ghost like presence in their wombs before for research?
